From the blog Comics Alliance:
"Among those in critical condition following last Friday's mass shooting at a midnight The Dark Knight Rises screening in Aurora, Colorado is Caleb Medley, an aspiring comedian and Batman fan. Medley lost his right eye in the incident, which took the lives of 12 people and injured dozens of others, and he is presently in a medically induced coma and breathing with the aid of a ventilator. Just four days after the attack, Medley's wife Katie, who was also in the cinema that night, gave birth to the couple's first child in the same hospital where he's still recovering.
To say it's been a harrowing ordeal for the young couple is an understatement. But their situation became even more intense when doctors told Katie Medley that her husband's medical bills could exceed $2 million, as Caleb is one of the 50 million Americans without health insurance."The list of people trying to exploit last week's mass shooting seems to be growing by the day. First it was used to try and denigrate the Tea Party to fit some mainstream media narrative that Tea Partiers are hate filled extremists and not just a bunch of Americans concerned with the direction their country is headed. Now, advocates of Obamacare and government run health insurance are trying to exploit one man's tragedy to further their political goals.
On July 22, a website has been setup for Caleb Medley, according to WHOIS records by Caleb Medley. The website tells Caleb's story and directs people to a donation page to help cover his medical expenses. At the same time a Facebook page was created to promote his story.
The donation page says Caleb needs to raise $500,000 because he has, "no insurance and needs help covering their medical bills, cost of living, baby supplies, and maybe even a college fund for Hugo," his new born child.
To date, concerned Americans have already donated over $300,000 online to the effort. An undisclosed amount has also been donated directly to the effort.
Rather than being a story about the failings of America's health care system, Caleb's tragedy proves how truly remarkable it is.
Despite having no insurance, Caleb is receiving the medical treatment he needs. He has not been turned away. He was not left to die in the streets as some Democrats claim would happen to those without insurance. Even Caleb's wife, who just gave birth in the same hospital was not turned away.
Caleb, his wife, and child all received the medical care they needed.
When all is said and done Caleb may have some hefty medical bills, but he may not. The hospital and surgeons who worked on Caleb may choose to donate their services. Americans have already contributed hundreds of thousands of dollars to help pay any costs. Should Caleb receive medical bills he can not afford to pay, he can also apply for financial protection from the medical debt, allowing him to go on living a happy and productive life raising his family.
