Obama Raising Tobacco Taxes by 2200%

Our dear leader, President Barack Hussein Obama, has been endowed with the gift of benevolence to raise federal taxes on tobacco by nearly 2,200%.

All the weak and feeble minded plebeians who lack the fortitude to kick their nicotine addictions can all thank our dear leader for making the distasteful act of smoking financially unfeasible. Our dear leader has made this decision for you.

The new SCHIP bill signed into law by President Obama on February 4, 2009 will have the following tax increases levied on cigarettes and other tobacco products:
  • Federal tax on cigarettes will increase from 39 cents to $1.01 per pack.
  • Federal tax on roll your own tobacco will increase from $1.07 to $24.78 per pound.
  • Federal tax on cigars will increase from 4.8 cents to 40 cents per cigar.
  • Federal tax on pipe tobacco will increase from $1.09 to $2.81.
  • Federal tax on chewing tobacco will increase from 19.5 cents to 50 cents.

Our dear leader has had the foresight to put these new and wonderful taxes into effect on April 1, 2009.

When signing the bill, President Obama had this to say:

In a decent society, there are certain obligations that are not subject to trade offs or negotiations.
- President Barack Obama, February 4th, 2009

All hail the dear leader!

What started out as "since you smoke, you have to pay more because you cost more in medical bills" is now:

"Smokers can now foot the bill for those lazy bums who won't go out and get a job on their own to pay for their own health insurance"

This will put a lot of people out of work - the tobacco farmers, the distribution centers, and the retailers of tobacco. I guess they weren't part of the 3-to-4 million jobs Oshithead was planning on "saving or creating".

Look out marijuana - there's a new cash crop to be grown in basements under florescent lights!

The best part is he's broken yet another pledge he made while campaigning.

Many small businesses and tobacco shops will be put out of business within a very short period of time after the start of the taxes. Why? Because there is no clause about existing stocks of tobacco. That means whatever stock the business has on hand on March 31 2009 immediately owes the new tax.

Do the math: if a tobacco shop has 100 lbs on hand, then April 1st the business now owes Uncle Sam $2,478. A thousand lbs? $24,780!

Bye-bye jobs...
