Was Barack Obama elected to end a war that has already ended? It is looking more and more like that is indeed the case.
A couple of days ago a journalist embedded with British and American forces in Iraq said he believed the Iraq War is over and that we had won. Now there is news that a deal the Bush administration and the Iraqi government have been working on has passed its toughest hurdle.
The deal, which was approved by the Iraqi cabinet on Nov. 16, will have all U.S. troops out of Iraqi cities by June 30, 2009, roughly six months. The plan also calls for all U.S. troops to be out of Iraq by the end of 2011.
Final approval of the deal will be given to the Iraqi Parliament, who may vote on the measure as early as Nov 24. It is expected to pass by a large margin.
The successful passing of the planned U.S. troop withdrawal will mark the beginning of the third and final phase of the Iraq War.
