Live Blogging the VP Debate

The VP debate is set to begin at 8pm (about 20 minutes). While the candidates complete their last minute prep and try to calm the butterflies, we'd thought we'd go ahead and get things setup here.

Check back here at 8 for the live blog. You can also join us in the live chat over at The D Rules.

Refresh [F5] often
---
Ifill chose to wear some ugly teal jacket...

Crowd excited. Sarah asks if she can call him Joe. Obvious show of respect, referring back to Obama calling Sen. McCain, "John".
---
Biden blames last 8 years of economic policy on economic crisis. Ignores the last two were under Democrat control.

Biden scoring big with women... Interesting. Cnn chose to change graph from standard Dem, Repub, Independent to gender based. They must not have liked those independents going down when Obama criticised Bush.
---
Palin looks really nervous.

Talks about McCain putting crisis above politics...
---
Biden, McCain out of touch when he says fundmentals strong.
---
Sarah says McCain was talking about the American worker
---
Palin says she's a maverick.

Goes after Biden on years in senate.
---
Ifill says they both ignored question. Follows up with whose responsible. Gives question to Palin first. Setting her up to blame minorities?
---
Palin blames predatory lenders.
---
CNN analysts scoring high for Palin... not sure why. I am still really disappointed CNN changed the response graph to gender based. That tells us nothing about how the debate is affecting voters.

Sexist?
---
Biden going off on gas prices.
---
Palin goes after Obama/Biden on raising taxes and voting against tax cuts 94 seperate times.

Talks about cutting government spending.
---
Biden says, nuh uh. Than says McCain voted 400 plus times for tax increases. Says she's ignoring deregulation.

Blames deregulation for crisis.
---
Why is Palin not going after Biden on over regulation... the real fault.

Ifill cuts of Palin for time.
---
Ifill gives too different questions to candidates. Gives Palin's last so you forget what she even asked Biden. Basically claimed McCain wants to cut everyones insurance and leave them without healthcare. Does anyone even remember what she asked biden?
---
Biden says we are going to cut taxes for middle-class.
---
Palin says they are just trying to redistribute wealth. Goes after Obama/Biden on raising taxes on small businesses.

Says paying taxes in not patriotic. Patriotism is getting government out of the way.
---
Ifill brings up McCain's healthcare plan. asks Palin if she wants to defend it.

Palin does. Talks about putting government in control of healthcare will look a lot like what government did being in control of the economy.
---
Biden in Scranton we call it fairness not redistribution. Says we won't raise taxes on small business. Guess he doesn't know small business income get taxed as capital gains.

Says McCain is going to have 20 million people dropped from health care. Tries to make a joke about it being the real bridge to nowhere. Aa smattering of giggles from the audience.
---
Keeps talking about cutting taxes on Exxon/Mobile... Doesn't play with men according to cnn graph.

As long as someone is talking, women seem to score high, regardless of what is being said.

Biden runs out of time, but is not cutoff by Ifill as Palin was.
---
Palin says Obama voted for the bill that gave the oil company the big tax cut. Says she said screw the oil guys, give the money back to the people.

Says she had o undo Obama's vote.
---
Ifill asks same question Lehrer did. Are you going to change your economic policy based on the bailout.
---
Biden tries to explain away Obama's vote. Doesn't play well with audience respondents.

Talks to audience and says we want to give you back the money, like she did in Alaska, ut McCain won't support windfall profits tax.
---
Palin talks about reforming freddie and fannie.
---
Biden looks kind of scary. He needs to smile.

says bankruptcy court should be able to adjust the prinicpal you owe on your home loan... that's scary. Someone loaned you the money for that home out of their pocket. Biden once them to pay for your ability to not pay? Talk about redistribution of wealth.

I think I'll go by me a million dollar home on a subprime, declare bankruptcy and let the court change the principal to a level I can afford.
---
Ifill asks Palin what is true about climate change and its causes. i guess she thinks Palin is a scientist not a Governor.

The causes are not an issue Palin says. We need to worry about what we are going to do about it. Scores with women and men.
---
Biden says its clearly man-made. "if you don't understand the cause, you can't come up with a solution." He needs to remember that when it comes to the mortgage crisis.

Now says Obama supports safe nuclear. Says we should invest in clean coal, despite previously being against it.

Admits we should drill.
---
Ifill says you haven't always supported clean coal. "yes, I have," he says. Women scores drop.
---
Palin hits him for calling offshore drilling, "rape."

Goes after him for previously saying there is no clean coal.
---
Says he supported clean coal for 25 years and quote was out of context.
---
Ifill, do you support same sex benefits like they do in Alaska. Do I smell a setup?

"Yes, i do," he says.
---
Palin says we should not redefine marriage. But is tolerant of same sex couples and their rights and would never propose denying same sex couples the same basic rights as heterosexual couples.
---
Ifill, Do you support gay marriage.

Biden, "No, we do not."
---
On to foreign policy.

Palin talks about surge as part of the plan to end war in Iraq. says Obama and Biden did not support the surge and voted against funding troops. Quotes Biden on criticism of Obama on war.
---
Biden says were's the plan? tries to say Bush is enacting Obama's withdrawal plan. Does not score well with women. Men nuetral.

Does score well when he says he will end the war, but goes back down when he says McCain will war forever.
---
Palin says your plan is surrender. Surge worked, Obama can't admit. The war will be over when the commanders on the ground and the iraqi government say it is.

Points out how Biden says he would be honored to run on McCain's opinion and that Obama wasn't ready to be command in chief.
---
Biden really looks grouchy.

Says McCain is dead wrong.
---
Which is a bigger threat, unstable Pakistan or nuclear Iran?

Biden implies Pakistan because they have weapons, but both are dangerous.

Says Iraq is not the central on the war on terror.

Biden says he know where Bin Laden lives...
---
Palin says Gen. Petraeus and al Qaida says Iraq is.

Says Iran is the bigger threat. It poses a clear danger to Israel... our 51st state? sheesh.
---
Ifill says all secretaries of state says we should engage our enemies.

Palin agrees, as does everyone, diplomacy is the best solution. But sometime the threat of force is diplomacy.
---
Biden says Obama did not say he would sit down with Iranian president. Says theocracy rules Iran not the president.
---
Ifill asks about Israel.

Palin says two state solution, is the solution.

israel is our strongest and bet ally in the middle east.
---
No one is a better friend to Israel than Joe Biden, says Joe Biden. tries to reassure people that Obama feels the same.

Says we should have put NATO troops in Lebanon.
---
Palin happy Joe loves Israel.

Says for a ticket like Obama-Biden that talks about the future, there is sure a lot of finger pointing backwards.
---
Palin talks surge tactics in afgahnistan. Names multiple tactics showing her better understanding of military strategy.
---
Ifill asks Biden is the American people will support putting troops in Darfur as he has called for.

Biden takes credit for putting troops in Bosnia. Again acting as if genocide was actually occrring which we now know wasn't.

says we should put o fly zone in Darfur. Guess the fact they don't have an airforce doesn't matter.
---
Palin says I am glad I am not from washington. so like you, joe, I don't have to explain why i was for it before I was against it.

Agrees with enforcing no fly zone in Darfur.
---
Biden, "I never supported John McCain's stance on the war." says he was against the Iraq war.
---
Palin says there is no place for politics in war strategy.
---
Ifill implies Obama would be assissinated. Has any candidate ever been asked a question like that? she will no doubt defend it by calling McCain old.
---
Palin, "we're mavericks, we're going to disagree." Says she will keep working on him in regards to Anwar.
---
Biden says I'm a man of the people. I go to home depot.
---
Palin asks Joe to quit pointing back at the Bush admin and start talking about what we are going to do in the future.

Turns to education. Talks about her family being a family of teachers.
---
Ifill says Palin said she needs to be told what the VP does. Biden said he would never be VP.

Palin says I think we worth both telling lame jokes. Everyone knows the VP resides over the Senate.
---
It will be intersting to see how Biden's manorism play out. He has scowled the whole debate. Keeps looking down.

Palin has engaged the camera, but does appear a bit like a deer in the headlights with her big brown eyes being magnified by her glasses.
---
Palin says I was picked because of my executive experience as mayor, as governor.
---
Biden says Cheney the most dangerous VP of all time.
---
Biden says his achilles heal is his accessive passion.
---
Biden says McCain is no Maverick.
---
Biden says change is hard. Takes a long time.
---
Palin says she's "caved" on Alaska budgets for the sake of progress. But she has not had to cave on crucial issues because she's able to work with people from all side to get the job done for the people.
---
Biden says McCain would say Biden is capable of working across the isle. Starts dropping names of people know one cares about and joe six pack wouldn't know.
---
Palin - I walk the walk, not just talk the talk.
---
Palin has great line. Freedom is just one generation from being lost.
---
Biden says most important election in history. Thinks mighty highly of himself and the messiah.
---
Post debate thoughts. No big moments. Lack luster evening.

John King says Palin performance uneven. Says she met the test.

Campbell Brown, I don't disagree with John. No major gaffes. She did quite well in the first half. Out of her element in foreign policy. Says Biden was very chivulrous for not pointintg out she was saying the wrong generals name. Yes, let's give him the benefit of the doubt. Bias? no, never.
Palin came out well and strong. Biden gave the best performance of his life, says the bald dude on cnn.

Fred Barnes of Fox News says Palin did what she needed to. Says at 9:55 Palin new she was winning. Says debate was all about testing Palin and Biden didn't matter at all.

Pat Buchanan on MSNBC says she did a sensational job, recaptured momentum from convention.

Another commenter brings up the general name mistake. Nearly simultaneous critique on all stations. We'd be willing to bet not one of them actually knew until the dems sent out those talking points.

CNN's Solidad O'brien asked undecided audience to raise hands to show who won. Then says Biden by a large margin. Thanks to the DVR, the vote was 13 for biden, 11 for Palin. Hardly a large margin and clear victory.

You did a great job keeping up and catching some things I missed.

Media is just now calling Biden out (I think the NY Post) for his insane comments about Hizbullah in Lebanon. The clean coal gaffe completely blew my mind.

CNN's O'Brien hearts Obama.

Sad thing is Mainstream Media has assisted (tho perhaps not formally) with mobilizing bias for Obama.

If he wins, it'll be fun holding him, Pelosi and Reid accountable. And we should all be calling for Frank and Dodd to be held accountable for what their complete lack of oversight caused in housing.

best, Kay B. Day
