Illegal Immigration Notes

Juanell Garrett, via Midwest Voices, does an excellent job of delving into the illegal immigration issue and voicing some very real concerns.

When I started researching my column on illegal immigration several months ago, I knew illegal immigration wasn't a good thing. Turns out, I didn't know the half of it.

Garrett's column includes notes taken from six books covering illegal immigration. These notes won't be online long, so read them while you can.

Every once in awhile somebody thinks providing amnesty for those already here is a good idea. It turns out that only causes more to "head for the border." In the book Whatever It Takes by J.D. Hayworth, the former congressman reports that after President Bush announced his guest worker plan Border Patrol agents interviewed apprehended illegals to find out whether the President’s announcement caused the influx they were seeing. They found that 45% crossed because of rumors of amnesty, 63% got information from their government or media supporting the idea, and 80% were looking to apply for it.

With the remaining presidential nominees for 2008 both being pro-amnesty, it's going to be more important than ever that Americans become knowledgeable on the issue and get involved to ensure their voices are heard.
