Proud to be an American...

We're proud to be American, here at the Kansas Citian, because if we weren't we might not have the freedom of speech required to post our opinions to a blog such as this one.

Take Gavin Brent, a blogger from Holywell, Flintshire in the UK, who was recently fined 150 euros for "menacing" after posting on his blog. What exactly was menacing about his post? Well, he questioned the treatment he received by magistrates when he was arrested earlier in the week.

Or French film star, Brigitte Bardot, who went on trial for the fifth time for "inciting racial hatred" when she said the Muslim community was "destroying our country and imposing its acts."

France is home to 5 million Muslims, Europe's largest Muslim community, making up 8 percent of France's population.

"I am fed up with being under the thumb of this population which is destroying us, destroying our country and imposing its acts," the star of 'And God created woman' and 'Contempt' said.

As Washington once said, "if the freedom of speech is taken away then dumb and silent we may be led, like sheep to the slaughter."

That wasn't what they found menacing, it was "P.S. D.C. Lloyd God help your new-born baby", which the magistrates said "any reasonable person" would find menacing. They were wrong though, it's a pretty standard form of rubbish insult used by some angry people which means "I think you are rubbish, I pity anyone that has you as a parent", not a threat.
