You Don't Gotta Go Home, But You Can't Stay Here

The department of Homeland Security is reporting deportations have nearly doubled in 2007 from the prior year. Over 280,000 illegal immigrants were caught and deported along the U.S./Mexico border in fiscal year 2007, the largest number ever in a single year. DHS has also began formal deportation proceedings on an additional 164,000 criminal illegal aliens currently serving time for crimes committed in the U.S. during the same period.

A new policy by DHS, Operation Streamline, prosecutes illegal aliens who enter in certain "high-risk" areas along the border. Those caught receive misdemeanors for a first time offense. Felonies are being dolled out for repeat offenders. As a result, in the final quarter of 2007, apprehension rates dropped nearly 70 percent.
